THE LIME-TREES
Through shutters, left ajar,
floats on the spring-sweet air
the smell of wholesome lime-trees in full bud,
pervading soul and blood.
Their large and shaded crowns
entice who have no homes
to live, far from life’s bustling,
under their secret rustling.
The wanderer, who hardly dares
to stretch his numb feet, full of cares,
their sweet smell soothes fast asleep,
relieved, his breathing free.
they shelter with the shade they lend
and give out such a beneficial scent;
oh heart, for your affliction,
who’s ever lavished such a consolation?
Who spreads his sturdy branches so on high,
into a bower of delight,
over your weary weakness?
Where can you find recourse and rest?
Now such a sweetness pure descends,
defying every doubt with mellow scents.
The lime-tree smells so sweetly
and God perfumes you deeply.
