ENCOUNTER
What have you done to me and I to you?
You looked at me – for just a moment – and I looked at you
and then you went your way; I went mine too.
There only was a moment’s shuddering,
a deeper understanding,
a questioning in wonder and a darkening,
dissatisfied, of vivid eyes, beloved, dear,
for not being allowed to near
each other, but must needs go on, sadder, far away from here.
